100th Anniversary Conference

Magnetic Recording and Information Storage

December 14, 1998 at Santa Clara University

The history of how magnetic recording evolved over its 100-year existence is a facinating story. Further, at the beginning of the new millennium, technical advances are proceeding at their most rapid rate ever. Magnetic recording has become the dominant data storage technology and key to realizing the potential of an "information age."

A 100th anniversary commemoration is a very special occasion and the program has been structured to appeal to: those immersed in its advancement; those involved in its application; and all individuals interested in how magnetic recording came to play such a profound role in our daily life.

The invention of magnetic rcording in retrospect was a paradigm shift in information storage. The continuing dramatic process in data storage density (a factor of 10 million in the last 50 years and a factor of 10 every 5 years today) has had an incalculable influence on our lives.
